Question 1

How do I know if my pool has a leak?

Accepted Answer

The most common signs are losing more than 1/4 inch of water per day (beyond normal evaporation), wet spots or soggy ground around the pool, a constantly running auto-fill valve, unexplained increases in your water bill, or visible cracks in the pool shell. If you suspect a leak, the bucket test is a simple first step: fill a bucket with pool water, place it on a step, and compare water loss after 24 hours. If the pool drops more than the bucket, you likely have a leak.

Question 11

My pool is losing water — how do I know if it's a leak or just evaporation?

Accepted Answer

A simple bucket test can help: fill a bucket with pool water, set it on a pool step, and mark both water levels. After 24 hours, compare the drop. If your pool lost more water than the bucket, you likely have a leak rather than evaporation. Pools typically lose up to 1/4 inch per day to evaporation — anything more warrants a professional pool leak detection inspection.
